Io Triumphe, Jack and Sally!

Occidental College recently unveiled its new alumni center, thanks in large part to Royal Oaks residents Jack and Sally Samuelson. Jack, an Oxy alum and co-founder of the development firm Samuelson Partners, built the new 8,000-square foot home for the college’s alumni relations offices.

Oxy showed its gratitude to the Samuelsons with an extraordinary ribbon-cutting ceremony. The new alumni office “symbolizes the college’s renewed commitment to its alumni and Jack and Sally’s generous lifetime of service to Occidental,” said Oxy President Jonathan Veitch.

Royal Oaks showcases its Bibles

Royal Oaks residents and staff recently showcased Bibles from around the world. Sponsored by the community’s spiritual life committee, the display featured more than 50 different editions of the Bible, owned by staff and residents. The collection ranged from a Bible in rhyme to a handmade version.

Among the residents, Jack Samuelson owned the oldest edition of the King James Bible, which was published in 1794. Resident Betty Sedat shared three versions that she and her husband, William, helped to translate for Guatemalan Indian tribes during their more than 50 years as missionaries. And resident Charles Stein contributed his “Prayer Book for Soldiers and Sailors,” which he carried while a prisoner of war in Poland during World War II.

75-Year Study Shows Significant Jump in U.S. Lifespan

Changes in lifestyle and medical advances have broadened our expected life span, according to a study that ranges from 1935 to 2010.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that the average American’s overall risk of dying at any given time dropped 60 percent since 1935. There are several reasons behind this improvement. Two key factors include a decline in smoking and better treatments for chronic ailments like heart disease. Another was the introduction of antibiotics in the 1940s to treat life-threatening diseases like pneumonia.

“The way we live now is much different than in the [1930s],” said Donna Hoyert, the study’s author and a health scientist at the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics.

More older adults choosing the single life

A rising number of adults over 50 are opting to live the single life, the New York Times reports citing a new study.

Based on an analysis of 2010 census data, demographers at Bowling Green State University in Ohio discovered that a third of adults between the ages of 46 and 64 were divorced, separated or had never been married. That’s compared with 13 percent of the unmarried population in 1970. The divorce rate among baby boomers has jumped by more than 50 percent in the last 20 years.

Researchers expect those numbers to continue to rise over the coming decades, the Times reports. What’s more, researchers see the shift impacting future care and services for older adults, many of whom have depended on spouses for support. They will have to search for other options to fend for themselves, which can be a daunting task. The Times reports that unmarried baby boomers are five times more likely to live in poverty than their married counterparts.

“We can’t just say that older people don’t get divorced or that middle-aged people won’t grow old alone,” said Susan L. Brown, director of the National Center for Family & Marriage Research at Bowling Green State and a co-author of the study.

“Now we actually need to pay attention to it, not only to the factors that precipitate, but also to the consequences,” Brown said.

Alzheimer’s costs continue to rise

The cost of caring for patients with Alzheimer’s disease is rising at an unsustainable pace, according to a recent study released last month.

The Alzheimer’s Association’s 2012 Alzheimer’s Disease Facts and Figures shows that the cost of caring for those living with the disease will reach $200 billion this year. That number likely will balloon to $1.1 trillion a year by 2050.

“Alzheimer’s is already a crisis and it’s growing worse with every year,” said Alzheimer’s Association President Harry Johns in a statement. “While lives affected and care costs soar, the cost of doing nothing is far greater than acting now.”

Medicare and Medicaid programs have covered about 70 percent of the costs for patient care. But that doesn’t account for the additional spending on treatment of chronic diseases that frequently afflict those with Alzheimer’s—diabetes, for example. Medicare will pay out 81 percent more for a patient with dementia and diabetes than for someone with just diabetes, according to the report.

The Alzheimer’s Association advocates for a greater focus on research into treatments that may cure, delay or even prevent the disease. “Alzheimer’s is a tremendous cost for families and for Medicare and Medicaid,” said Johns. “This crisis simply cannot be allowed to reach its maximum scale because it will overwhelm an already overburdened system.”

There is no current treatment to cure, prevent or slow Alzheimer’s. You can learn more here.

Regaining Independence One Step at a Time

Alma PontelloRoyal Oaks resident Alma Pontello recently finished a marathon of sorts. It took her 14 months, and she had dedicated fans who cheered her on every step of the way.

Pontello’s marathon began in 2007, when she fell and broke her hip. As a result, she was bedridden for four months and living at Bradbury Oaks, Royal Oaks’ skilled nursing center.

Those not knowing Pontello might assume she would need care for the rest of her life after such an accident. But she had both the determination and the support to complete the long trek back to independence.

“The staff at the nursing facility gave me such wonderful care,” says Pontello. “They boosted my morale. We would talk, do puzzles, and I even taught some of the staff how to knit and crochet.”

When Pontello was physically ready, therapists helped her get back on her feet by helping her to walk daily. “Every day, they would encourage me to take a few more steps, always with smiles on their faces and an encouraging ‘good job,’” she says.

Eventually Pontello triumphed in her 14-month-long marathon. In December 2008, she was able to get around on her own well enough to move into assisted living.

“At Royal Oaks you live as independently as you are capable of being,” she says, “and you always get the help you need.”

Old Friends, New Neighbors

Jack and Eleanor RobinsonRoyal Oaks is a place for residents to develop new friendships. But, it’s also a place where old friendships can continue to flourish.

Take Jack and Eleanor Robinson. The Robinsons have been friends with John and Barbara Clark for more than a decade, after first meeting the couple at an adult Sunday school class at their church. Now they’re not just friends, they’re neighbors.

The Robinsons were the first to move to Royal Oaks in November 2010. The Clarks visited their friends in their new home and later moved to the community in July 2011.

“We didn’t try to talk them into moving here, but we did let them know we thought it was a lovely place,” says Eleanor. “Where to move is a big decision people have to make for themselves.”

After visiting their friends’ new home, the Clarks were impressed with the community. The Clarks lived in a split-level home with many stairs, and began thinking about relocating. “We saw how we could benefit from living at Royal Oaks,” says Barbara, who adds that the other Royal Oaks residents have made it “very pleasant to live here.”

Eleanor is enjoying her time with old friends, and says “it makes me feel good to see how they’re benefiting from what Royal Oaks has to offer.”
